Hair oil and hair serum get mixed up all the time, and searches for hair serum keep climbing. They are different products with different jobs. Here is a plain guide so you can pick the right one, or use both.
What is a hair serum?
A hair serum is a lightweight finishing product, and many are based on silicones or similar smoothing ingredients. You apply a small amount to the lengths of damp or dry hair to tame frizz, add shine and make hair feel smooth. It works mostly on the surface of the hair, and the effect usually lasts until your next wash.
What is a hair oil?
A hair oil is based on plant oils, often blended with herbs and botanicals. Traditional oiling is done on the scalp and lengths, left in for a couple of hours or overnight, and then washed out. It is about nourishment and care over time, not an instant finish — which is also why oiling is the more common routine people turn to for hair fall and scalp concerns, rather than a surface-level serum.
Hair oil vs hair serum at a glance
- Base: serums are often silicone-based, oils are plant-oil based.
- Where you use it: serums go on the lengths, oils can go on the scalp and lengths.
- When you use it: serums are a quick styling step, oils are usually a ritual before washing.
- What you notice: serums give instant smoothness and shine, oils build up softness and nourishment with regular use.
Can you use both?
Yes. Many people oil the scalp and lengths before a wash, then use a drop of serum on dry ends for a polished finish. They do different jobs and do not replace each other.
What about scalp serums?
You will also see products sold as scalp serums. These are leave-on treatments applied at the roots, often in a dropper bottle. Because the dropper makes it easy to apply directly to the parting, a light oil in a dropper can feel a lot like one.
Where SoRooted Hair Therapy fits
To be clear about what it is: Hair Therapy is an oil, not a silicone serum. It is a no-heat infused blend of oils and botanicals, made from a family recipe that started in Durban, South Africa. It comes in a 100 mL dropper bottle and has a light, non-greasy feel, so it is easy to apply directly to the scalp and massage in. If you are looking for something with a serum-style application and an oiling ritual, that is the space it sits in.
